Mouthpieces with Western cheekpieces, combination bits, and Parelli cheekpieces are sweet iron which oxidizes when exposed to moisture, releasing a sweet taste in the horse’s mouth. All mouthpieces have copper inlay to encourage salivation. Myler Bits offer special features that make them truly unique. ISM Curved Mouthpiece Mouthpiece Thickness 1 2 3 1. Independent Side Movement™ The barrel in the center acts as a bushing, allowing each side of the bit to move independently of the other. When you lift one rein, only one side of the bit moves, giving the horse a very clear signal. Provides excellent shoulder control as well as lateral flexion. 2. Curved Mouthpiece Myler mouthpieces have a distinctive curve that creates more room for the tongue to pass under the bit so the horse can swallow more freely. Although Level 1 mouthpieces have a more pronounced curve, all Myler mouthpieces are curved to some degree. 3. Mouthpiece Thickness Most Myler mouthpieces are 7/16” thick (11.11mm), a thickness that allows the bit to fit comfortably in the horse’s mouth. In English bits, we offer a selection of mouthpieces that measure 14mm at the cheekpiece, tapering to 11.11mm inside the mouth.This provides a slightly larger surface area on the bars and lips, but still provides ample room for the tongue inside the mouth. MB 47PB Level 1 Level 2 Level 2-3 Level 3 MYLER MOUTHPIECES MEASURING FOR A BIT To measure your horse accurately, you will need a wooden dowel or the handle of a wooden spoon. 1. Insert the dowel in your horse’s mouth where the bit would normally sit. 2. Wait until the horse relaxes in his mouth and stops chewing the dowel. 3. Mark the dowel on each side of the face, where the lips end. 4. Remove the dowel and measure between the two marks. Choose the size nearest your measurement, but go up, not down, to make sure that the bit won’t be too snug. The goal of Myler Bits® is to make your horse as comfortable as possible. One simple step towards this goal is to make sure you have the correct size of bit. Myler Bits fit a little differently than traditional bits because of their distinctive curve. If the bit fits properly, you should see at least 1/8” to 1/4” of bit on both sides of your horse’s mouth. Traditional Correctional with Cricket 27HP with Cricket. No ISM. Possible palate pressure. Patented Modified Snaffle Cheeks Some Myler snaffle cheeks have been modified with a unique feature called “hooks.”The hooks are actually slots (English dee or eggbutt) or rings (Western dee) that keep the bridle fixed in place. Attach the reins through the hook slots to lift the cheek and use the Independent Side Movement, adding little to no leverage. Cheeks with hooks also have a loop on the top of each cheek for a curb chain or curb strap. 2. Patented Independent Swivel Cheek The purchase of the cheekpiece moves independently of the shank so the purchase can flex when the shank moves, preventing it from digging into the horse’s cheek when the reins are engaged.This feature is offered on all Myler Combination Bits and Western shank bits (except black shanks and embossed shanks). TRANSITIONING TO A NEW BIT Once you’ve selected a bit, it’s time to introduce the horse to it.We recommend introducing any new bit in a safe, closed environment, such as a round pen or arena. There are two exercises we recommend as transition exercises: vertical flexion (a) and lateral flexion (b). To practice vertical flexion, stand next to the horse’s head and lift the reins at the withers until you make light contact. Hold the contact until the horse gives to the bit, even slightly, then immediately release. Do this on both sides until the horse is relaxed and flexing at the poll. To practice lateral flexion, stand next to the horse and lift the rein, but ask him to bend his neck and turn towards you.When he does, release him immediately. Three-Ring Combination The most versatile combination cheek offers two rein positions (lower and middle ring). Two-Ring Combination Offers a single rein position (lower ring). Long Shank Combination Cheek has a lower rein position than last ring on the 3-ring. The combination bit synchronizes the pressure applied to nose, chin and poll.The noseband and chin strap form a single unit connected through the purchase. By simply changing the noseband/chin strap adjustment, the rider can control how much, if any, pressure the mouthpiece applies and to what degree the nose, chin and poll are engaged.This sophistication makes the combination bit applicable across a wide range of horses and indispensable to any training program. COMBINATION BITS a d b c e Combination Bit Hang tag 89-COMBOTAG HOW IT WORKS The Myler Combination Bit uses features of a ring bit, shank bit and hackamore to create an innovative and sophisticated tool for training and every day riding. How the combination works: 1. Adjust the chin strap so that you can just get a pinky under the noseband. 2. Attach reins to one of two rein positions (d). 3. The noseband and chin strap connect through the purchase (a), synchronizing pressure to the nose, chin and poll before the mouthpiece engages. 4. If the horse does not respond to the pressure on the nose, chin and poll, the mouthpiece slides (b), giving him another warning. 5. If he ignores the moving mouthpiece, it will hit a stop (c), causing it to engage. The horse has three opportunities to respond to the rider’s rein pressure before the mouthpiece is engaged. If the horse respects the chin, nose, poll pressure, he can stay on the bit without any tongue pressure or interference with swallowing.The support string (e) keeps the noseband in place when you bridle the horse. To adjust the Combination Bit in an English bridle, remove the cheekpieces and replace with the next size down. For example, a Full Size bridle takes a Cob cheekpiece.To adjust the Combination Bit in a Western headstall, you may have to punch holes to allow adjustment up the headstall. For a headstall that works for most horses, try the Zilco Hackamore Bridle on page 175.The shorter cheekpieces will fit the Combination Bit to a wide range of horses with no special adjustments necessary.The Zilco material is low maintenance and durable.
